A letter: Congratulations Madam Headmistress of Achimota SHS
I have listened to a lot of people in your refusal to admit the Rastafarian students in your school. Madam, I wish your colleagues would emulate you and be resolute in the management of their schools. I know there are norms and cultures every student must adhere to in the perimeters of every school in Ghana. If you cannot abide by the school rules and regulations as a student, you do not need a Visa to find another school.
They claim the dreadlocks is their culture which is the beliefs, values, behaviour, and material objects that constitute a people’s way of life. If this unpropitious act is allowed to find its way into our schools, then we should prepare for the worse of cultures in our schools. Imagine a student reporting to school barefooted or naked because it is his or her culture. Think of a female student exposing the nipples in the name of her culture. What will be the fate of teacher Lawal?
Although there is no research that shows a clear correlation between dreadlocks and learning or understanding, the students must not be admitted. What is the difference between the Rastafarian dreadlocks and shatters dreadlocks?
Madam, did I hear people say, GES directed you to admit the students? It can not be true. Hmmm! If it is true, I want to remind GES that, some teachers completed their various courses of studies and are waiting for upgrading to principal superintendents by your outfit to no avail. Again, numerous teachers are still waiting for their legacy arrears to be paid. I will not talk of qualified teachers who could not partake in the recent promotion exams because of your administrative lapses.
Mr. Director General, I believe strongly you have a representative in the Achimota School Management Board- the Regional Director. I want you to remind beginning teachers like be of the duties of the board and juxtapose your action to undermining the authority of the board.
Mma Headmistress, I am in support of your action just like NAGRAT and I call on other interested parties like GNAT, CCT, CHASS, NUGS, and OLD STUDENTS OF ACHIMOTA to act now and save the already suffocating educational system from collapsing.
