The Minister of Education, Hon. Mathew Opoku-Prempeh has disclosed the amount of to be charged for a workshop or any programme that will enhance teachers’ competency in the Ghana Education service (GES. He made this revelation on Tuesday, October 29, 2020, during Nation Building Updates under the theme “The Teacher at the Center of Quality education”.
In his submission, he reiterated the essence of paying teacher professional allowances. According to him, this will help build the professional competencies of teachers as a result enhancing the pedagogies and knowledge of teachers.
The minister stated emphatically that the allowances would be paid in the month of November therefore teachers should be expecting it. He however disclosed the amount district directors of education should charge per workshop.
In his statement, he said, “the professional teacher allowance was for certain things that the teachers have committed themselves to do. These things include, to have professional development days- for a teacher to maintain yourself in good standing you will have to do your Continuous Professional Development (CPD) and this is a free day for every teacher. The CPD is organized 4 days in every year hence the allowance will cater for all cost involved and this training courses is will cost about ₵50 or ₵60 Cedis for each. This is mainly to support and enhance the teachers teaching capacity”.
He also added that, every Wednesday in the afternoon in our various schools, there will be no teaching. The teachers will meet to think about themselves and how to upgrade and improve the teaching and learning in the school.
According to the minister, this alone constitutes 78 contact hours that the teachers is given for the teacher to improve him/herself.
