The three most recognized teacher unions, the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Coalition of Concern Teachers-Ghana (CCT-GH) has called on the minister of education, Dr. Yaw Adutwum and the Ghana Education Service (GES) to as a matter of urgency upgrade teachers and make payment of responsibility allowances.
In a statement signed by the leadership of these unions, teachers who held various responsibilities in the various educational institutions and are entitled to responsibility allowance have had their allowance frozen when they were promoted to another rank. Despite several efforts by the affected teachers and their teacher unions, a great number of these teachers have not had their responsibility allowance restored.
According to the statement, another problem that is demotivating teachers is the failure by the Ghana Education Service to upgrade to the appropriate ranks. Teachers who have both on their own, financed themselves to acquire degrees and those who have completed their study leave with or without salary.
The unions have therefore alas a matter of urgency called on the the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service to take steps to address these issues by the end of April,2021.
