The management of the University of Education, Winneba-Institute for Teacher Education, and Continuous Professional Development (ITECPD) have made a pronouncement on their intention to run a 4-session top-up sandwich programme for in-service teachers.
A statement cited by Listengh.net indicates that the Ministry of Education through the National Council for Tertiary Education (NTCE) affiliated fifteen colleges of Education the University of Education, Winneba to be mentored in March 2019. The formal affiliation was signed between the university and the colleges of education on September 12.
However, upon numerous deliberations with major stakeholders of the programme, the committee set up finally designed a sandwich top-up programme which targeted at graduating diploma holders of the colleges.
“A team from the University was commissioned to visit all the Colleges of Education campuses between 5th June and 2nd July 2019 to ascertain their readiness to host such a program and also, assess their faculty and physical structures to support the running of the program”, the statement added.
According to the statement, a Committee was set up to review and draw a Top-up B.Ed. Sandwich program for the Colleges of Education in line with the New Four-Year B.Ed. Curriculum.
The program is aimed at preparing in-service teachers to become effective, engaging, and inspirational. it is also to help fully prepare individuals to deliver with respect to the basic school curriculum thereby enhancing learning outcomes of students as set out by the National Teachers Standards (NTS).
The objectives for implementing the program are therefore to:
● Build the capacity of the College of Education staff in running sandwich programs,
● Bring education to the doorstep of students,
● Generate income for the colleges, and,
● Make effective use of campus facilities during holiday periods.
The program is a B.Ed. Top-Up Sandwich designed to cover a duration of 4 Sessions (2 sessions in a year). There are three specialisms (options) on offer, namely:
● Early Grade
● Upper Primary
● JHS (Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, TVET/ Music& Dance/ PE, Literacy and Languages SEN, and ICT)
